harder to get and abuse. >>> a pathology report shows former nfl player junior seau had a degenerative brain disease when he shot and killed himself last year. the national institutes of health studied seau's brain at his family's request. doctors found abnormalities consistent with the disease known as cte likely brought on by years of repeated hits to the head. cte is believed to have caused depression, memory loss and dementia in a number of former football players. joining us now to explain more is dr. michael yokelson from national medstar hospital. how do repeated head injuries lead to a disease? >> thank you for having me. so we are very familiar with what happens in concussion on a one time basis, but what we have learned over many years of studying this is that you end up with multiple concussions or multiple brain injuries, you can develop chronic traumatic encephalopathy or cte and it becomes a degenerative process that over type can look very much like alzheimer's and have other symptoms besides just the cognitive problems or the dementia and it can cause depression and oth

investigation into the death of nfl great junior seau. doctors revealing their findings for the first time. and it could affect players from the big leagues to pop warner. abc's jim avila is here with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a giant in the game, junior seau is the biggest name in football, linked to brain damage for taking too many hits to the head. abc news and espn learned exclusively, before his suicide, seau suffered damage to his head. junior seau, an icon in the 1990s, whose passionate hits made him a dominant figure in the nfl. but after his sudden suicide in 2012, many questioned whether the effect of those hits on the 43-year-old's brain, could have played a role. >> the head-to-head contact, the collisions, they're out of control. >> reporter: now, seau's family says it has an answer to that question from the national institutes of health. abc news and espn have learned exclusively, seau's brain showed visible signs of cte, chronic, traumatic encephalopathy, the injury that shrinks and hardens brain tissue like this. and is at the center of today's foo

's what they think about junior seau seau. it showed chronic encephalopathy. most of the nfl players brains have shown this. these are people who wanted their brain studied. they are a little bit of a biased group. clearly, it is a significant issue. stage four being anger, um pu e impulsivity. >> so the knocks to his head changed his personality too? >> what we've learned from this is the only thing that can cause this problem, known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is like an alzheimer's disease that strikes young people i saw some first-hand. went to the lab where they are looking at this. that chronic traumatic encephalopathy can be caused by concussions and sub con cuss sieve hits. seau didn't have a lot of concussions but he did have a lot of hits to the head tichlts not just concussions but just repeated blows to the head over a very long career. >> how many hits to the head and you get this condition? >> we don't seem to have an absolute number. this is still relatively emerging science. a couple years ago, we weren't hardly talking about this. we do seem to know that th

it is you are a star nfl quarterback. say rg3 has tears in his anterior cruciate ligament, his acl. that's the legment that prevent the shin and thigh bones from sliding. doctors say that's common injury and it heals well non-invasive surgery. the stribl also tore his lateral collateral ligament, his lcl, located on the outside of the knee joint and this one prevents the knee from bowing out. doctors tell us that the lcl has to be repaired with an open surgery, which means a long recovery. it could also have long-term implications on the knee's mobility that's a big concern for a star quarterback like rg3. >> does make things more complex. and it's not the routine acl reconstruction that players have all the time. the wildcard in this is having the late really side done as well. and it's a bit more unpredictable when you add that lateral side. if anybody's gonna get back to full, it would likely be rg3, given what kind of shape he is in preoperatively. >> doctors tell thanks rg3's previous acl surgery, the one he had when he was playing at baylor in 2009, should not impact his recovery t
